Emergency Shelter Care
Emergency Shelter Care is designed to service up to 10 individuals and is a licensed co-ed facility. Residents at the Shelter are school age up to 18 years of age. These individuals are placed due to a family or personal crisis. The average stay is less than 30 days while the family, social worker and/or juvenile court considers placements options. Families and youth can make a self-referral, however appropriate written authorization must be obtained from a parent, guardian, or juvenile court in order to remain. The Shelter is funded through a contract with the Iowa Department of Human Services. Residents are given daily responsibilities, participate in group discussions, have planned recreational activities, and attend school when in session.

The mission of the Van Buren County Child Abuse Prevention Council is to prevent child abuse and strengthen children and families by providing and enhancing service programs that provide family support and education; promoting child safety and preventing child abuse; educating the public about child abuse and its prevention; encouraging community involvement; advocating; and participating in and promoting collaborative and unduplicated efforts that strengthen families to protect and nurture children.
The Van Buren County SAFE Coalition seeks to stimulate community involvement to promote responsible behaviors among youth and adults; leading to SAFE (Substance Abuse Free Environment) and healthy communities.

VBPAT is a free early learning evidence-base program, designed to enhance child development and school achievement through; personal in-home visits, developmental screenings, group connections and community resources. VBPAT offers a NEST education program for pregnant women and for families with children under 3 years old. The NEST program offers incentives that allow families to earn points to be used in the NEST store for items such as: diapers, wipes, books, puzzles and other essential needs.
